There are several advantages when you choose a tankless water heater, include compact design, easy to use&install, saves water, continuous flow of hot water, rates 30-40% more efficient than conventional water  heaters, costs less to operate.

CAUTION: Before you install DIY Tankless Water Heater, you should consider the following points, tankless water heater may require larger diameter gas supply lines (in general like it), higher voltage power supply (if contemplating electric on-demand), larger diameter exhaust system or dedicated  special stainless steel flue (known as Category II, III or IV).

2. Turn off the main water line into the house.

3. Disconnect the supply line from your old water heater. Prepare a bucket and place the bucket under the water bib because maybe you have water left in the lines even if your main has been shut off.

4. Disconnect the heat source from the old water heater. At this step, what you do depends on the type of your old water heater. If your old water heater are the gas type (propane), make sure the supply valve is closed (this is usually determined by the direction of the handle to the valve sitting either in the same direction as the line "open", opposite the direction of the line "closed"). If previously you use electric water heater, simply unplug the appliance from the wall outlet.

5. After you make sure the old water heater completely disconnected, you have to remove it and make sure you do it according to the law in the area you live in.

6. Now you can open a new water heater carton and place all hardware and instructional materials close at hand.

7. Locate a new water heater in a location that allows for proper spacing around it to comply with all regulations of state and local building.

8. Read manufacturer's instructions for Installing a tankless heater on the wall and make sure that you have supported its weight appropriately.

9. Now you're ready to hook up all the connections.

10. If your new water heater is a gas type, install ventilation ducting. Typically tankless water heaters requires larger flue or special stainless steel flue.

11. Begin with the supply line (water line).

12. Furthermore it should be a source of heat. If your water heater is gas type, connect the gas supply line from the pilot on the wall for a new water heater. Open the valve so that the handle is in the same direction as the line. If your water heater is electric type, plug into the wall.

13. Following manufacturers directions, light the pilot on the gas water heater.

14. You have completed your work. You can enjoy hot water in favorite shower location.

Warning
  • Some models of water heaters require a certified installer, if you decide to DIY, probably will make the warranty not applicable. Be sure to read the instructions carefully. Also, some natural gas units require larger pipes or electric circuits greater than tank-type water heaters usual, of course this will require a plumber and / or electrician to install.
  • Check local plumbing and electrical codes before starting. This is to determine whether you need a licensed plumber and / or electrician or not because some areas require it. If in doubt, contact your building code enforcement or the local municipal utility companies.
